Carrier oils are vegetable oils derived from the fatty portion of a plant and are typically used to dilute essential oils before they are applied to the skin...hence "carrier" being it carries the essential oil onto the skin. Different carrier oils offer different therapeutic properties and characteristics.
Essential oils are volatile, concentrated oils, evaporate quickly and contain a natural smell characteristic of the plant it is derived from. Sometimes the scent is too powerful if undiluted. Carrier oils do not evaporate and don't have a strong fragrance. Diluting the essential oil with a carrier oil helps reduce the concentration of an essential oil without altering its therapeutic qualities.
